Hydrosols

Hydrosols are a great addition to your skincare and wellness routine. Hydrosols provide aromatherapeutic benefits like relieving anxiety. For skin, hydrosol, or plant water, can be hydrating and nourishing.

My favorite skin-safe hydrosols are rose, lavender, witch hazel, helichrysum, geranium, ylang-ylang, and sage.

What is a hydrosol?

Hydrosol is a natural byproduct of essential oil distillation. During distillation, plant material is heated to release steam and oil. Once the liquid is cooled, the essential oil will float to the top of the liquid, and below is the hydrosol. So, they are essentially less concentrated essential oils. This gives you all the plant properties with more hydration and less sensitivity risk.

How do hydrosols work?

Hydrosols are hydrating, so they nourish the skin and can help products penetrate deeply into the skin. They are great for all skin types, based on the plant.

Hydrosols overall are known for their hydrating properties that make them great for dry skin types (especially during winter). Hydrosols are a plant product, so the benefit really depends on the plant water you choose. Some have antibacterial properties, which can help with acne and other skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

For aromatherapy, plant water creates a less intense sensory experience. Plants like chamomile or lavender can be sprayed to calm your mood.

  • Aromatherapy

  • Since it’s typically a single ingredient and a great product for refilling in bulk.

How can I add hydrosols to my routine?

They can be used as a toner after cleansing to lock in moisture before applying other products on top of your face. They're also useful for cleaning wounds and cuts and reducing inflammation around them. They can be used instead of your favorite facial cleanser or toner or even as a light moisturizer for dry skin types. They can also be used as a toner after cleansing to lock in moisture before applying other products on top of your face!

There are many different types of hydrosols, each with its own unique properties. Here are some of the most common:

  • Rose hydrosol is an excellent choice for dry or sensitive skin because it's gentle and soothing. It can also be used as a toner to help balance excess oil without drying out your pores or causing breakouts.

  • Lavender hydrosol is another great option for those with sensitive skin; however, it also works well on normal and oily complexions because it helps balance sebum production. Lavender hydrosol has anti-inflammatory properties that can make it helpful in treating acne as well as eczema flare-ups. It's even been shown to reduce redness associated with rosacea!

  • Witch hazel hydrosol is a favorite among DIY enthusiasts thanks to its ability to tighten pores while gently exfoliating dead cells from the surface layer of our epidermis (or outermost layer); witch hazel makes an excellent toner when mixed with water into a spray bottle or applied directly onto cotton balls before wiping across areas like forehead or nose where wrinkles tend to form over time due to sun damage.
