Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a gentle yet effective ingredient widely used in skin care because it treats acne well. It helps clear current acne and prevents future breakouts.

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most recommended ingredients, so you will likely see it in many different products, from cleansers to moisturizers to spot treatments.

This blog covers the basics of this powerhouse ingredient and highlights my favorite benzoyl products!

What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

It is an antiseptic agent used in cosmetics and food to prevent or diminish the growth of bacteria. This ingredient primarily works to kill the bacteria and reduce excess oil within the skin, making the environment inhabitable for further bacterial growth. It is a trusted ingredient that has been extensively researched and proven to work.

Benzoyl Peroxide containing ingredients come in varying concentrations, typically 2-10%. Even at its lowest concentration, it is still a powerfully effective ingredient; so if you have sensitive skin, this is still a viable option for you (2).

"The laboratory results from the in vivo study of P. acnes showed the 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel reduced the anaerobic population by 97% after twice-daily treatments for one week and by 99% after two weeks." (2)

How Does It Work?

Benzoyl peroxide works to control the bacteria that cause breakouts. The most common skin-invading bacteria is Propionibacterium acnes, also known as P. acnes (1). Benzoyl peroxide changes the environment in which the bacteria thrive, causing them to die off. This bacteria is prone to overgrowth, so it is important to treat it effectively.

What Are The Benefits of Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide is gentle, effective, and commonly available over the counter. It is less sensitizing than some of its alternatives, such as acne-fighting beta-hydroxy acids (BHA); it can be used by various skin types and in combination with products and treatments.

It is possible to use benzoyl peroxide in combination with ingredients such as salicylic acid. In this example, benzoyl peroxide would kill the bacteria, and salicylic acid would help break down dead skin cells (chemical exfoliation), allowing the skin to heal.

What Benzoyl Peroxide Products Do You Recommend?

Benzoyl peroxide comes in varying strengths and even in combination with other treatments, making it accessible for all skin types. It can be used on the face, back, chest, or anywhere on the body. While many products have this popular ingredient, these two have worked for my clients and me. These products are safe for your face and body!

I recommend CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Face Cleanser for mild acne and blackheads. This gentle yet effective product is carried in most stores and also online.

For more severe acne, the PCA BPO 5% Cleanser contains 5% benzoyl peroxide. This cleanser is for daily use in treating acne and managing re-occurring breakouts.

I know that treating acne can be complicated and frustrating. Our skin's appearance affects our
self-esteem and mental health.

Learning about these ingredients can help you gain confidence in understanding your skin. My greatest joy is empowering my clients with the knowledge and providing the tools they need to meet their skin goals.
